Privacy Policy
Effective October 10, 2026
Present Tense ("we", "us") is an independently operated website based in the United States. You can reach us any time through our contact form; we reply within two business days. This policy explains what information we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have.
What we collect
Information you give us:
- Your email address when you sign up for the holiday reminder email
- Your name, email, and message when you use the contact form
Information that stays on your device: Your quiz answers and saved gift list are stored only in your browser on your device. We never receive them.
Information collected automatically: our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested, and time) to keep the site running and secure. We don't use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics.
How we use it
- To respond to you and provide what you asked for
- To send the emails you signed up for, each with an unsubscribe link
- To process payments and keep required records
- To keep the site secure and prevent fraud or abuse
- To comply with the law
We don't use your information to build advertising profiles.
Who we share it with
- Service providers that run parts of the site for us, under contracts that limit their use of your data: Netlify (website hosting and form storage), Stripe (payments, where offered), and Google Fonts (your browser loads typefaces from Google, which receives your IP address).
- Stores you visit through our links. When you click a shopping link, you leave our site. The store (for example Amazon) sees that you came from us so it can credit us a commission, and its own privacy policy applies from then on.
- Legal reasons: when required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users, the public, or us.
- Business transfers: if the business is sold or merged, your information may transfer to the new owner under this policy.
Payments. We don't sell anything or take payments ourselves.
Sale and sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share your personal information for money or for targeted advertising. Stores pay us commissions based on purchases, not on your personal information.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon, and other states with privacy laws), you may have the right to know what personal information we have about you, get a copy, correct it, delete it, and opt out of its sale, sharing, or use for targeted advertising. We give these rights to everyone, wherever you live.
To make a request, use our contact form and choose "Privacy request" or "Delete my data." We'll confirm we received it within 10 days and respond within 45 days. We may need to confirm your identity first. You can use an authorized agent. If we deny your request, you can appeal by replying to our decision, and we'll respond within 60 days. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.
We honor Global Privacy Control browser signals as an opt-out of sale and sharing.
How long we keep it
Reminder sign-ups are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them, and deleted no later than 24 months after our last email to you. Contact form messages are kept for up to 24 months.
Security
We use reasonable safeguards, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access limited to people who need it. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your personal information, we'll notify you as the law requires.
Children
Present Tense isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Visitors outside the United States
We're based in the United States and your information is processed here.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For significant changes, we'll post a notice on the site or email people we have contact details for.
